Having looked at local jewelry shops, we were highly uninspired. Everything we saw was banal and very expensive. So we did what anyone would do: hopped on a train to Antwerp and spent a weekend in the Diamond District. Just to put this is perspective: there are 40 diamond shops just in the main train station.

By the end of day 1, we had the field down to 5 finalists.  In the end, we made an unusual choice: instead of buying identical wedding bands, we composed a pair of rings that are different but go together, just like us. We like the symbolism of that.

Les bijouteries locales visitées dans le coin nous laissaient sur notre faim : tout était banal et cher. Donc nous étions fait ce que n'importe qui aurait fait : nous avons pris le Thalys à Anvers pour un week-end dans le quartier des diamantiers. A titre indicatif : même à la gare principale, il y a un quarantaine de bijouteries.


A la fin de la première journée nous avons identifié 5 alliances possibles. En fin de compte, nous avons fait un choix insolite : au lieu d'acheter des alliances classiques, nous avons choisi deux bagues différentes mais qui vont bien ensemble, à notre image, quoi. Nous aimons le symbolisme.

Wedding dinner

We were 10 for dinner, and it was mid-week, so we decided to do something simple. Of course, this is France, the country with the cuisine that was recently recognized as part of our intangible World Heritage by UNESCO, so "simple food" for a wedding doesn't mean quite the same thing as it might in...oh say, the USA. In this case, simple meant picking up the appetizer and main course from the caterer, the cake (pie really) from the bakery, the hors d'oeuvres from the frozen food store and the salad and cheese from the local market.


Nous étions 10 pour le dîner et c'était au milieu de la semaine, donc nous avons décidé de faire simple. Mais nous sommes quand même en France, le pays dont la gastronomie a été récemment sacré "patrimoine mondial immatériel" par l'UNESCO, donc "cuisine simple" n'a pas la même connotation qu'ailleurs, par exemple aux USA. Dans ce cas-ci, simple voulait dire: acheter l'entrée et le plat chez un traiteur, le gâteau (en fait une tarte) à la boulangerie, les petits fours chez Picard et la salade et le fromage au marché.

Everyone made a great effort to pitch in so that we didn't have to do very much work, especially Jocelyne.
Les invités se sont surpassé pour éviter que nous bossions trop lors de notre propre mariage, surtout Jocelyne.

Ze toast & ze champagne

Thanks to modern technology, Big Guy (AKA Tom AKA Father of the Bride) was able to make the first toast via Skype. Wielding a large glass of red wine (hey, it was noon in Atlanta!) he offered the following toast to the newlyweds:

Gregorie has been part of the Sukalac family and Kristen has been part of the Yon family for over 10 years now.  We are so very grateful that they have decided to legally adopt us.

 Please raise your glasses to our new Son-In-Law and our new Daughter-In-Law, we wish you a long lifetime together full of love and happiness.

Grâce aux technologies modernes, Big Guy (alias Tom, alias Father of the Bride) a pu porter le premier toast via Skype. Grand verre de vin rouge à la main (il était midi passé à Atlanta), il a offert ces paroles à l'honneur des jeunes mariés :

Cela fait plus de 10 ans que Grégorie a intégré la famille Sukalac et Kristen la famille Yon. Nous sommes heureux que vous nous avez enfin adoptés légalement.

Levez vos verres à notre nouveau gendre et nouvelle bru. Nous vous souhaitons une longue vie pleine d'amour et de bonheur.

The custom labels (a tradition in France and especially in the Champagne region for weddings, baptisms, milestone birthdays...) included our names, the date and a reference to the vintage "drôle d'assemblage". This is a play on words inspired by the label we chose with two zebras.  In French the expression "drôle de zèbre" is more or less the equivalent of "horse of a different color". The champagne we had opted for is an assemblage, or mixture of different grapes. So both the wine and the couple are a funny combination!

Les étiquettes personnalisées (une tradition en France et surtout en Champagne pour des mariages, baptêmes et grands anniversaires) comprenaient nos prénoms, la date et la mention "drôle d'assemblage". Les zèbres sur l'étiquette que nous avons choisi et le fait que le champagne tradition Galichet soit un assemblage ont inspiré ce jeu de mots.

The champagne flutes used by the bride and groom were the first objects we ever bought together (we have our priorities!).  So we chose them even though one of them has a base that had to be seriously glued back together after an accident and they probably cost us around 2 EUR / $2.50.

Les flûtes utilisées par les jeunes mariés pour arroser leur mariage étaient les premiers objets jamais achetés conjointement (nous avons nos priorités !). Donc c'était notre choix de verre pour le mariage malgré que le fait que nous les avons acheté dans un magasin "cave à Ali Baba" pour environ dix balles.
