"Kneel down and drink"

After a very stressful beginning to 2008, Greg and Kristen were in desperate need of a vacation by June. So we packed up and headed to Botswana, using Thom as a great excuse to go on safari. With the help of a wonderful travel agent, we planned a trip that began in the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta. The Okavango River is born in the highlands of Angola and winds its way to northwestern Botswana, where it disappears into the sands of the Kalahari Desert. It takes the water about six months to make the journey, so the water level was only just beginning to rise from the January rains when we arrived.

We flew from Paris to Johannesburg where we spent one great afternoon with Kristen's friend Wendy. The next day we flew to Maun, where we switched into a little plane (ten seats) to fly into the Delta. The planes are so small that you are not allowed to take hard luggage, only duffel bags and backpacks. The airfield runways are just packed dirt. The people coming to pick you up arrive ten minutes early in order to chase any animals off the runway, if required.

Our first stop was Xugana Island Camp (http://www.desertdelta.com/index.php?id=27&submenu=8). (Xugana -- the first letter is pronounced like a simultaneous click and K -- means "kneel down and drink") If you need to get away from it all, this is the place for you. After flying into the Delta, you take a boat for about 15 minutes to get to the camp, which has 8 guest "tents". The tents have every comfort you can imagine, except for a fourth wall to keep the cold out, and electricity is only available at certain hours. We were there in the winter, so the nighttime temperature was about 5 C (40 F). The hot water bottles and thick comforters made sleeping OK, but it was hard to get up in the morning! We only took showers at noon when the temperature was about 24 C (75 F).

If you are stressed by all the decisions you have to take every day, safari life is for you! It's like being in the military. The schedule varies slightly from one camp to another. This is what it was at Xugana:

6:30 Hot water is delivered during your wake-up visit / L'eau chaude est livré au réveil

7:00 Breakfast (i.e. coffee, tea and biscuits) / Petit déj à la française

7:30 Morning activity (Walking safari on Palm Island) / Activité matinale (Safari à pied sur l'Ile des Palmes)

10:30 Return from morning activity and brunch / Retour et brunch à l'anglaise

12:00 Rest period / Repos

15:00 Tea (i.e. more food) / Le thé anglais (c'est-à-dire remanger)

15:30 Afternoon activity (mokoro ride the first day and a visit to Hippo Pool the second) / Activité de l'après-midi (balade en mokoro la première journée et visite à l'Etang des Hippos la deuxième)

19:00 Pre-dinner drinks / Apéritif

19:30 Dinner and post-dinner drinks / Dîner et digestifs

When you are on safari, you get assigned to vehicle groups. For better or worse, you are stuck with these people. Our best friends on the island were Trish and Brian, a couple of very cool septugenarians who live in South Africa. We also had a very nice mother and daughter from New Zealand with us. The first night at dinner, there were also a group we called "the Germans", who didn't really mix with the English speakers. More about them in another article. Brian plays the straight man to Trish's more eccentric personality. And she does seem to attract fun. A young bird got confused and decided that Trish was a tree.
