La Roche Guyon

Still catching up....

On the way back from Monet's house, Kristen and her father stopped at the castle La Roche-Guyon. It's a beautiful castle and very cool. The keep on top of the cliff dates from the medieval period, whereas the palace at the foot of the cliff is much more recent. The really nifty thing about La Roche-Guyon is that the keep and the palace are connected by secret tunnels carved out of the soft, chalk cliffs. Even the dovecote is carved into the cliff face in this way. Kristen has always wanted to visit the secret tunnels and was delighted to go to the very top of the keep. 'Big Guy' lost interest in climbing once he reached the top of the cliff.

The castle is very strategically located along the Seine and has had a colorful history. The Nazis even carved huge galleries out of the foot of the cliff, and Rommel used it as his HQ for a while.

PS. Confusingly for English speakers, the French translation of a castle's keep is "donjon".

Encore du rattrapage...

En rentrant de Giverny, Kristen et son père se sont arrêtés au château de la Roche-Guyon, qui est très beau. Le donjon en haut de la falaise est médiéval, et le palais à son pied est plus récent. Mais ce qui rend le château vachement intéressant, c'est les tunnels creusés dans la falaise qui relient les deux parties. Même le colombier est creusé dans la face de la falaise. Kristen voulait toujours visiter les tunnels et a été ravie de monter jusqu'en haut du donjon. Le 'Grand Type' (Big Guy en VO) en avait marre une fois arrivé au sommet de la falaise.

Le château a un emplacement sur la Seine très stratégique et donc a eu une histoire très mouvementée. Les Nazis ont même creusé de grandes galéries dans la base et Rommel y a installé son QG pendant un temps.

PS. Il ne faut pas confondre le mot français 'donjon' avec l'anglais 'dungeon' qui signifie 'cachot'.

Monet's House

So after more than three months, we pick up where we left off in mid-April. Sorry for the long absence, but it was a crazy, hectic time for work and family reasons, and it was just impossible to find time for the blog.

Après plus que trois mois, nous reprenons où on vous a laissé en mi-avril. Désolée pour l'absence prolongée, mais la vie a été très mouvementée pour des raisons professionnelles et personnelles et il nous étions impossible de trouver le temps pour le blog.

If you are tired of stories and pictures about our garden, good news! Today's entry is about someone else's garden! When Kristen's dad was here in April, they went to Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted some of his most famous pictures, including the waterlilies.
One of the things we really like about Giverny is that -- unlike most tourist attractions -- it's different every time, so we don't get bored with it.

Si vous en avez marre des photos de notre jardin, bonne nouvelle ! Aujourd'hui, nous parlons du jardin d'un autre. Quand le papa de Kristen à L'Haÿ le mois d'avril, ils ont visité Giverny, où Claude Monet habitait et a peint un grand nombre de ses tableaux les plus célèbres, y compris les nénuphars.

Nous aimons amener des gens à Giverny car il est différent chaque fois, donc nous ne nous ennuyons pas comme aux certains d'autres monuments.
